Will Lumineers Look Fake?

December 3, 2016

I want a smile makeover. I suggested Lumineers because you don’t have to remove any tooth structure. He told me it was a bad idea because everyone would know they were fake teeth. He said porcelain veneers were a problem and never look natural. Instead, he wants me to get dental crowns. He said they’ll look more natural. I don’t want an unnatural smile, but one of the reasons I suggested Lumineers was I didn’t want to remove healthy tooth structure. Dental Crowns remove even more tooth and my teeth are healthy. Is there another option?

Melissa – Michigan

Melissa,

The problem isn’t with porcelain veneers. The problem is your dentist. He is likely a very decent family dentist, but an absolutely horrible cosmetic dentist. He can work with crowns but has no real experience with porcelain veneers. So, instead of referring you to someone who can give you a gorgeous smile, he suggests a treatment he knows how to do. But, do you have any guarantee that it will be beautiful? I’d be willing to bet it won’t be. So, you’ll remove healthy tooth structure and end up with a subpar smile.

So, what do you do? I’d suggest you find a different dentist for your smile makeover. One who has a great deal of experience doing porcelain veneers. It doesn’t have to be Lumineers. In fact, you will likely get a more beautiful smile with a different brand. Ask to see before and after photos of their work. It would also help if they had some form of a beautiful smile guarantee.

I’m not suggesting you leave your dentist completely. Just don’t use him for cosmetic work.

Would Lumineers be a good temporary makeover?

February 27, 2016

I have a class reunion coming up and am not thrilled with my teeth. I don’t have a ton of money and was thinking of getting snap on smile. It seems pretty reasonably priced. My dentist suggested lumineers because they’re better. I wanted to get a second opinion before deciding. Is it really better?

Teriney T. – Georgia

Teriney,

While your dentist is right that Lumineers are better than snap-on smile, they are not temporary. Plus, the cost significantly more than snap-on smile.

Lumineers are a brand of porcelain veneers. In other words, they’re tiny wafers of porcelain that get permanently bonded onto your teeth after your dentist has them made to his specifications.

If you just want something for that one night and don’t want to spend any significant amount of money, then I’d stick with your plan of snap-on smile.  If you want to invest in a permanent, gorgeous smile, then Lumineers (or any other brand of porcelain veneers) would be the better option.

Is it better to get Lumineers or porcelain veneers for a smile makeover?

Angie W.- Wyoming

Angie,

Lumineers are a brand of porcelain veneers. The are often promoted as different becuase they are promoted as not needing any tooth preparation.  Some cosmetic dentists feel that makes them a little bulky on your smile.

The best thing to do is to choose a good cosmetic dentist, with a lot of experience and they can determine which brand of porcelain veneers will work best for what you want to do with your smile.  He or she may choose Lumineers, or they may choose a different brand.
